A Dirty Secret of Clean Laundry
Doing the wash means rinsing off dirt, grime and germs, leaving your clothes fresh and clean… right?
If you've been using big brand laundry detergent or dryer sheets, you might be exposing yourself and your family to two very dangerous carcinogens: acetaldehyde and benzene.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has said that these two chemical additives should not be inhaled, yet they find their way into several scented detergents and dryer sheets.
Your best bet is to go natural.
Your second best bet is to skip the perfumes and scents and go scent-free.
Many stores now offer these options, such as dropps, and they're definitely worth the switch.
Every year, around half a million tourists visit County Antrim in Ireland to marvel at the natural phenomenon that is the Giant's Causeway. Made up of 40,000 basalt columns formed by volcanic action, the Giant's Causeway is often called the eighth wonder of the world. The dramatic hexagonal red columns make up part of the coastline that forms a natural protection against severe Atlantic storms.
The scenery in this area gives some of the most breathtaking views in the world; enormous cliffs, secluded bays, isolated ruins, and the Giant's Causeway make for an awe inspiring location.
The Giant's Causeway is surrounded by myth
and legend. The famous legend concerns two rival giants, Benandonner, who lived in Scotland, and Finn MacCool in Ireland. MacCool was a relatively small giant at 52 feet (about 16 meters), and the two giants would shout across the sea to each other demanding a trial of strength.
Finn MacCool decided to build a rocky path across the sea between the two countries to enable the contest to begin, but exhausted by the work, he fell asleep on the causeway and was found by his giant wife Oonagh. Suddenly she saw Benandonner approaching, who was truly a huge giant. Knowing that Finn would be no match for the huge giant, she placed a coat on top of the sleeping Finn.
Benandonner demanded to know where Finn was. Oonagh replied by pointing at the sleeping Finn and saying, "Be quiet or you will wake my child." Seeing this, Benandonner had second thoughts. If that was the size of their child, how big would Finn be? He ran back to Scotland, smashing the causeway in his trail.
Other stories surrounding the Giant's Causeway concern the wrecks of ships that have perished on the wild coastline. In 1588 at midnight on 30 October, the Girona, a ship that was part of a Spanish Armada
, hit Lacada Point. The ship had just picked up the survivors from two other shipwrecks. The crew battled to stop the collision, but it was to no avail, and 1,200 men were lost.
Only five men survived the wreck, and descendants of the survivors are said to live still in Antrim. The victims of the wreck are buried at St Cuthbert's graveyard near Dunluce Castle. The cannons that survived the wreck can also be found there.
The Giant's Causeway is a place that mixes history, legend, and breathtaking views. It also has some of the most amazing natural plants and wildlife in the world. The area is preserved by the National Trust, a conservation organization that operates in Northern Ireland, Wales, and England.
The Great Awakening... was a Christian religious revival in America. There were actually several distinct periods of increased religious activity, but the term often refers to a period in the 1730s and 1740s also known as the First Great Awakening. Characteristics of the Great Awakening include increased church membership, fervent sermons from pastors, social activism, and new religious denominations.
The phrase "great awakening" refers to a perceived slumber in religious devotion; it was used by those who favored a resurgence of religious activity. English physicist and mathematician Isaac Newton's 1687 publication of Principia offered widely-accepted arguments for a mechanic universe that followed natural laws. Many in the following Age of Enlightenment challenged religious claims and advocated human values more in line with those of Classical times than those connected to periods of strong Christian influence.
Two leading figures are believed to have sparked the First Great Awakening in the United States. While the revivals were part of a broader religious movement that was strong in England, Scotland, and Germany, ardent speeches by preachers in America were immediately followed by heightened religious activity. Jonathan Edwards is known to have evoked vivid images of hell in his best-known sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God." George Whitefield, originally an English preacher, began to draw large audiences in America after 1739. Edwards' and Whitefield's speech style emphasized an emotional connection to everyday Christians rather than rational theological arguments and was imitated by many preachers and lay-Christians alike.
The Second Great Awakening
extended from the 1790s to the time before the American Civil War
broke out in 1860. Similar to the original Great Awakening, there was a surge in preaching activity. A number of political movements also advanced during this time period, including the abolition of slavery, equal rights for women, prison reform, and alcohol temperance. The Second Great Awakening also coincided with the emergence of a number of new Protestant denominations, such as Mormon
, Baptist, and Shaker
Some historians recognize a Third Great Awakening. The American Civil War
upset many religious activities in the northern U.S., but is believed to have stimulated revivals in the South. Following the war, there was an increase in social activism, including campaigns for better working conditions and the prohibition of alcohol, pornography, and prostitution. Missionary work, both domestic and international, was very active during this time period. The Third Great Awakening, like the Second, saw the establishment of new Christian denominations as well.
Bedbugs are trending on the internet!
Are bedbugs the latest craze?
Web MD claims that the term "bedbugs" is currently one of their top 5 search terms, and Google's keyword search tool indicates more than 1.5 million monthly searches.
While bedbugs were near elimination in the US in the 1950s, their numbers are on the rise, largely due to their increasing resistance to pesticides.
While bedbugs have a nasty bite more irritating than mosquitoes, the only good thing about bedbugs is that they are not thought to spread disease.
One way to tell if bedbugs are bugging you, is the pattern of the bites, they are usually in a rather straight line and often take some time to appear.
